Piri-piri is a grass similar to a tropical cane that can reach 2 meters in height and grows in damp areas, flooded marshes and along rivers and watercourses of the Amazon forest (where it can help control erosion of soil).

Piri-piri belongs to the family of CYPERACEAE comprising about 36 genera and 128 species of Cyperus. Although it is native of the Amazon, piri-piri is also found in other areas and tropical countries, including the southern United States, Africa, Asia, Australia and throughout South America.

Piri-piri contains flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins, tannins, terpenes and sugars. Many of its biological actions are attributed to some sesquiterpeni called ciperoni who are alche in other plants of the family. Two of these elements, the ciperotundone and alpha-ciperone have documented actions antimalarials, as well as the ability to inhibit the synthesis of nitric oxide (a pro-oxidant) and prostaglandin synthase (aspirin and ibuprofen are inhibitors of prostaglandin synthetase).

Some of the most recent research on piri-piri have focused on popular usage as a remedy for epilepsy and seizures. African researchers have published several studies suggesting that piri-piri could mediate many of the chemical reactions required in epilessia brain, and reported that the rhizome of the plant possesses anti-epileptic.
